Junior Ecologist

Role Overview

As a Junior Ecologist you will play an active role in ecological surveys, data collection, assessment and reporting, supporting senior staff and contributing to high impact projects across multiple sectors. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to develop practical skills, gain field experience, and grow within the profession with support and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for assisting in and contributing to:

  • Conducting ecological field surveys (habitat mapping, species surveys including birds, bats, mammals and plants), following standard survey methodologies and good practice.
  • Supporting the planning, execution and documentation of survey programmes and fieldwork logistics.
  • Assisting with data entry, analysis and preparation of ecological reports (e.g., Habitat Surveys, Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, Appropriate Assessments, Natura Impact Statements).
  • Supporting preparation of technical inputs to planning applications and environmental assessments.
  • Ensuring accurate, high-quality deliverables and compliance with relevant Irish and EU environmental legislation and best practice guidelines.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree (Level 8) in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology or similar
  • 2+ years professional experience in ecological consultancy or a similar role with relevant field and reporting experience.
  • Demonstrable fieldwork experience could include prior placements, internships or volunteer roles.
  • Strong interest in ecological consultancy and practical survey skills development.
  • Good report writing and communication skills.
  • Competence with digital tools (e.g. MS Office/Excel/PowerPoint, data entry, basic GIS).
  • Full clean Irish / EU driver’s licence and ability to travel to survey sites.

Desirable:

  • CIEEM Graduate or Associate membership or eligibility working toward membership (support provided).
  • Familiarity with Irish ecological legislation and planning.
  • Previous experience in ecological assessment (EcIA, AA, NIS).
