We’re delighted to announce the successful completion of rehabilitation works at the Cavan County Museum’s renowned World War One outdoor replica trench—the largest of its kind in Ireland and the UK. After extensive restoration, the trench officially reopened to visitors in August 2025.
Originally opened in August 2014, this immersive exhibit has welcomed countless visitors, offering a unique educational experience with authentic sound and visual effects that bring the history of the trenches to life. Built using manuals and specifications from the Irish Guards and echoing the conditions experienced by the Royal Irish Fusiliers at the Battle of the Somme, the trench boasts over 350m of connected frontline, communication, and support passages, supported by more than 6,000 sandbags. Recent years saw safety issues due to partial collapses, leading to the temporary closure of some sections. O’Connor Sutton Cronin was proud to be appointed by Cavan County Council to devise and implement a long-term design solution, ensuring the future of this important historical attraction.
Our scope of work included:
– Assessing the existing trench conditions
– Designing a robust system for permanent, safe public access
– Preparing tender documentation and managing contractor procurement
– Overseeing construction and project handover
We are proud to have played a part in safeguarding this significant piece of WW1 history and look forward to seeing visitors enjoy a safer, more accessible trench experience.
