O’Connor Sutton Cronin was appointed Civil and Structural Consultants on Lot 5, Gaelscoil De Hide, Fermoy – the project responsibilities included the detailed design of raft and strip foundations and structural steelwork of a 3-storey Precast Concrete structure.

  • Ground conditions included a sloping site with the building partly founded on a sloping rock horizon.
  • The triangular building footprint enclosed an internal two-tier courtyard. The upper-level yard was founded on strip footings on rock and a raft foundation at the lower level was based on stiff clay.
  • The building included a number of external terraces and link corridors requiring the structural frame design to incorporate thermal breaks to minimise heat loss. A
transfer steelwork frame was needed for this school due to the varied floor layouts between upper classrooms levels and the General Purpose hall and entrance lobby areas at the ground floor level.
  • The project requirements included fortnightly site visits with the Department of Education.
