O’Connor Sutton Cronin were appointed as Ecological Clerk of Works for the ‘Barrow Blueway Project’. The Barrow Blueway proposes to develop and enhance the existing towpath along the banks of the Grand Canal Barrow Line. The Proposed Barrow Blueway commences in Lowtown, County Kildare, passes through County Laois and finishes in Athy, County Kildare. Approximately 47km in County Kildare and 16km in County Laois. The key components of the Barrow Blueway works include the following:
- Upgrade and re-surfacing of existing Barrow Way towpath and track to a multiuse leisure trail along Grand Canal (Barrow Line).
- Localised road widening.
- Provision of road crossings and interfaces for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Construction of new pedestrian footbridges at Athy and at Rathangan.
- Replacement of railings and gates at selected locations and construction of fencing.
- The site required extensive surveys such as pre-commencement Ecological surveys and Invasive Species Surveys.
