O’Connor Sutton Cronin supported Iarnród Éireann in the refurbishment of the historic Drogheda Viaduct over the River Boyne, an important structure on the Dublin-Belfast main line. The works were carefully planned and delivered during scheduled railway possessions, maintaining live rail operations throughout the programme.

The refurbishment included deck waterproofing, a new protective paint system, steelwork repairs, bridge bearing replacement, permanent way renewals and a distinctive multi-coloured LED architectural lighting scheme, co-funded by Louth County Council. The project incorporated 1,800m² of deck waterproofing, 15,000m² of protective coating works, 4,500m² of independent hanging scaffold and encapsulation, eight bearing replacements, approximately 25 tonnes of new steelwork, and the renewal of 500 metres of track.

Acting as Iarnród Éireann’s site-based representative for the painting and scaffolding package, OCSC provided Resident Engineer and contract-administration services. This included coordinating access requirements for several specialist contractors, overseeing the integration of parallel steelwork, bearing, track and lighting contracts, and monitoring compliance with the Works Requirements.

The independent scaffold and full encapsulation system enabled the works to proceed safely while protecting both the operational railway and the River Boyne from debris. Site activities were monitored against relevant railway, health and safety, temporary works and environmental standards, supporting the safe and efficient delivery of this complex heritage-rail infrastructure refurbishment.
