O’Connor Sutton Cronin was appointed by Iarnród Éireann in September 2017 to provide full civil, structural and PSDP services for the refurbishment of the historic train hall roof at Pearse Station.

The project involved a detailed assessment of the existing roof structure, informed by comprehensive surveys, review of historic steelwork records and verification of member sizes and capacities. The design retained as much of the original primary structure as possible, while developing a robust solution for the roof’s long-term renewal.

Maintaining station operations and public access throughout construction was central to the project strategy. A protective system beneath the roof, comprising crash decking and safety netting, was incorporated to safeguard passengers, personnel and rail operations within the running shed below while works progressed overhead.

Drone-based surveying and photographic montage technology were also used to clearly communicate the proposed works to Iarnród Éireann and wider project stakeholders. This provided an accessible, visual explanation of the construction approach and helped support decision-making on a complex live-station refurbishment.

The services extended through the construction phase, with OCSC providing Employer’s Representative, Resident Engineering and PSDP support to oversee the safe, coordinated delivery of the works.
