OCSC was appointed by Iarnród Éireann to lead the multidisciplinary design and delivery of the Bray DART Station Upgrade Works. The project focused on providing modern, higher-quality staff accommodation with increased capacity while preserving the architectural character of the historic station building, which dates from 1854.
OCSC delivered civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services in-house, supported by architectural and quantity surveying services as part of the wider multidisciplinary team. Our role also included design team leadership, procurement advice, tender documentation and assessment, construction supervision and Employer’s Representative services through to handover.
The works comprised a complete soft strip and refurbishment of the main station building, the installation of a new steel mezzanine within the main hall and the extension and development of the basement to accommodate improved driver welfare facilities. New basement drainage infrastructure, including sump drainage and foul-water pumping systems, was installed, while existing mechanical and electrical services were upgraded to meet current operational requirements. The scheme also included repairs to protected windows, new external hardstanding and the consolidation and upgrading of existing services. Given the station’s protected status, minimal-intervention techniques were adopted throughout the works. OCSC worked closely with the conservation architect, contractor and specialist suppliers to ensure the historic fabric of the building was carefully protected.
The project was delivered through a carefully coordinated, phased construction programme that allowed Bray DART Station to remain operational at all times. Access and egress arrangements were continually reviewed in consultation with Iarnród Éireann, maintaining a safe and accessible environment for passengers, staff and the construction team while minimising disruption to railway operations.
